I am extremely sorry.

Review: Eyes like Stars by Lisa Mantchev

clip_image003

All her world’s a stage
Enter Stage Right
Beatrice Shakespeare Smith (Bertie): Our heroine.
Nate: A dashing pirate who will do anything to protect Bertie.
Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed, and Peaseblossom: Four tiny, mischievous fairies, and Bertie’s loyal sidekicks.
Ariel: A seductive air spirit. Disaster follows in his wake, but Bertie simply cannot resist him.

Welcome to the Théâtre Illuminata, where the characters of every play ever written can be found behind the curtain. The actors are bound to the Théâtre by The Book, an ancient and magical tome of scripts. Bertie is not one of the actors, but they are her family. And she is about to lose them all because The Book has been threatened, and along with it the Théâtre. It’s the only home Bertie has ever known, and she has to find a way to save it. But first, there’s the small problem of two handsome men, both vying for her attention. The course of true love never did run smooth. . . .

What first drew me to this book was the beautiful artwork on the cover. I would walk into Chapters every other week and always pick up this book read the excerpt and book it back. Unfortunately at the time I didn’t have any extra money to spend on books so I had to wait. But the wait was worth it. Lisa knows how to take “boring” Shakespeare and make it interesting. I would have preferred to read her versions in high school.

My likes:

- New twists on famous theatre characters

- Bertie is a strong female type who doesn’t let any of the boys push her around

- I LOVE the fairies. They had the best dialogue throughout the book. They are always talking about cupcakes and other delicious treats. (I wanted to go buy a cupcake every time they talked about sweets) My favourite scene in the entire book is as follows:

Bertie snatched Moth from midair. “How do you feel? Any more free than usual?”

He paused to Reflect. “Yeah, but only because I’m not wearing underwear today.”

Cobweb and Mustardseed backed away from him. “You’re going commando?’

Moth nodded. “I forget to five Mrs. Edith my hamper this week.”

“Aw, man! I want to go commando, too!” Cobweb said as he reached for his trouser buttons.
Page 191 – 192

I was in tears laughing so hard at this scene it is my favourite

- Nate – I love me some pirate, and perfect for Bertie

- Ariel – Though I think I like him more for his gracefulness and looks. Don’t think he is the one for Bertie. He is for me

Dislikes:

- My only complaint is trying to understand how the Theatre work was confusing at first but Lisa explained it near the end.

Overall this is a great book for someone wanting to read something happier than vampires, ghosts and werewolves and loves classical theatre productions.

The Results:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Paranormalcy_jkt_ed2_84144752_std

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.
But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal.

That's right Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. Which release on August 31 – that is like less than a week away :). I have heard so much about this novel on Twitter that I can’t wait to pick it up while I’m down in the U.S.

 Movies I saw this week:

Scott Pilgram vs. The World

Rating: 6 out of 5

I loooved this movie. I was in tears pretty much the entire time from laughing so hard. I would say this is The Hangover movie of the summer. Everyone MUST go see this movie! I DEMAND IT :)expendables_movie_poster2

The Expendables

Rating: 5 out of 5

I technically didn't see this one the boyfriend did (I went to Scott Pilgram instead.) But he says that it is a must see movie. It doesn't have a cheesy story line and the action is amazing. Pretty much if your a guy you need to see this movie. It does have anyone who has ever done and action movie in it.

The Other Guys:

Rating: 3 out of 5

I was fairly disappointed in this movie. I thought it was going to be way funnier than it was unfortunately it wasn't :(. There was a point in the movie that my bf was making fun of me for because it was more “accountant” humour and i thought it was funny. He said it wasn't but whatever!

Any movies you saw this weekend that is worth seeing?

Review: Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler

clip_image003Thou art the black rider. Go Thee out unto the world.

Lisabeth Lewis has a black steed, a set of scales, and a new job: she’s been appointed Famine, How will an anorexic seventeen-year-old girl from the suburbs fare as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Traveling the world on her steed gives Lisa freedom from her troubles at home – her constant battle with hunger and her struggle to hide it from the people who care about her. But being Famine forces her to go places where hunger is a painful part of everyday life, and to face the horrifying effects of her phenomenal power. Can Lisa find a way to harness that power – and the courage to fight her own inner demons?

A wildly original approach to the issue of eating disorders, Hunger is about the struggle to find balance in a world of extremes, and uses fantastic trope to explore a difficult topic that touches the lives of many teens.
Excerpt from back of book

Jackie has created a novel that I believe with touch the heart of every girl that reads it. Any girl who has an eating disorder or has thought about it should read this novel. I guarantee it will change your prospective and will give you your second chance just like Lisa got her second chance. Throughout reading the book I felt the pain both Lisa and Tammy were feeling. I don’t suggest eating anything while you’re reading...there is a pretty graphic scene one of the character puking. Let’s just say my Chicken McNuggets did not like reading that and I was almost sick. I know very ironic that I was eating a super unhealthy meal while reading about two girls that can’t bear to eat anything. I felt pretty guilty.

Jackie also shows her character Lisa that she does have people that care about her well being. Even though at first Lisa is pissed and thinks they are just being insulting. Lisa is lucky that Death has given her a second chance to live her life. Most girls don’t get a second chance. Lisa realizes throughout the book that she does have a problem and has a support system behind her.

Two thumbs up to Jackie for writing a novel based on one of the biggest problems among teen girls. I hope that it will open the eyes of many and will help them to ask for the help that they need. Remember you will always have a support system behind you even if you don’t believe it. Your family and friends would rather have a happy and healthy daughter/friend then a sad and unhealthy or possibly dead daughter/friend.

The Results:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Date Night

I loved this movie! I’ll be making a trip to Wal-Mart this week – besides I tricked my boyfriend into taking me shopping but the deal was I had to buy him his new Madden game. With my secret crush on Steve Carell, why wouldn’t I love this movie? I was in tears laughing more than once. I’ve never seen anything with Tina Fey but she is pretty damn funny.

So I realized I was giving everyone movie titles the came out this past Friday so I’m going to stay with the trend and just call it:

Movies in theatres this past Friday:

Director: Adam McKay (Step Brothers)

You've seen them in the background of photos of Danson and Highsmith, out of focus and eyes closed. They're not heroes - they're "the Other Guys." But every cop has his or her day and soon Gamble and Hoitz stumble into a seemingly innocuous case no other detective wants to touch that could turn  into New York City's biggest crime. It's the opportunity of their lives, but do these guys have the right stuff?

Also in theatres but I don’t feel like I need to elaborate is Step-Up 3D.

I didn’t get a chance to go out and see any movies this week. :(

Review: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

I was lucky enough to win an ARC copy from Chapters of the Clockwork Angel. Welcome to my 2nd review, I am very excited to share my thoughts on this novel with you all. Enjoy!

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother in Victorian England, something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, who are members of a secret organization called the Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she has the power to transform at will into another person. The Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. She soon finds herself fascinated by – and torn between – two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and Will, whose volatile moods keep everyone at arm’s length. As their search draws the deep into a plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.
Excerpt from back of book.

Cassandra Clare has done it again creating a strong and fantastic read for her new trilogy. If you loved The Mortal Instruments you will love The Infernal Devices. You will notice similar characteristics between Will and Jace...being arrogant seems to run in the family. Magnus pops in for a chapter or two, we get to see a different side of him. I was hoping for a little bit more Magnus but I think we may be seeing him a lot more in Book 2. Tessa is a strong female type. I like how she grew throughout the book. I saw some similarities to Clary. In the Twitter world everyone seems to be able to pick between Team Jem (James) and Team Will. I truly cannot decide. I am torn. I feel bad for Jem because of his secret but he makes the best of it and acts like a complete gentlemen at all time unlike Will who is a jerk at the best of times but when he decides to be sweet and gentlemanly it’s perfect. I really can’t decide. So I am going to take Cassandra’s advice and go with TEAM CHURCH for now LOL.

Each chapter ended with me wanting more. I was always sad thatmy lunch break was over so I couldn’t keep reading. If you are a fan of The Mortal Instruments make sure you pick up the Clockwork Angel on August 31, 2010.
