As of June 9, 2012 I will no longer be accepting e-books for review. This is due to the overwhelming
demand of reviews, work and night classes taking up a lot of my spare time. It
is taking me several months to read and post reviews therefore until “my to be
reviewed list” is smaller I will no longer accept any more e-books for review.
I am extremely sorry.

Review: Feyland by Anthea Sharp

Feyland: The Dark Realm
Feyland is the most immersive computer game ever designed, and fifteen-year-old Jennet Carter is the first to play the prototype. But she doesn’t suspect the virtual world is close enough to touch — or that she’ll be battling for her life against the Dark Queen of the faeries.
Tam Linn is the perfect hero — in-game. Too bad the rest of his life is seriously flawed. The last thing he needs is rich-girl Jennet prying into his secrets, insisting he’s the only one who can help her.
Together, Jennet and Tam enter the Dark Realm of Feyland, only to discover that the entire human world is in danger. Pushed to the limit of their abilities, they must defeat the Dark Queen… before it’s too late. Excerpt and cover from
I loved Feyland! It felt like I was dragged into the Feyland and was playing the game myself. The story reminded me a lot of the video game World of Warcraft (which I have a hate-love and a love/loved relationship with its complicated). I liked how Jennet and Tam interacted with each other and how they interacted when they were at each other places which was out of the normal standard of living. I liked how Anthea made the Feyland realm feel real. The story was well written I wasn’t confused about anything but I would like to know what year it was set in. But once I know the year I may have more questions in regards to the story but we shall see. I look forward to what book 2 will bring for Jennet and Tam.

Review: Dark Seeker by Taryn Browning

For 17-year-old Seeker, Janie Grey, ridding the Baltimore streets of the undead is an inherited duty passed down from her Cherokee ancestors. Seeker Training Lesson #1: Never trust the undead. After her father’s tragic death, Janie creates her own life lesson: Love isn’t worth the risk. Both lessons are easy to follow until she encounters the flawed Kai Sterdam. At first, she believes he is the hybrid she is trained to hunt. But, when he has human traits, she determines she doesn’t know what he is. As Janie’s intrigue over who Kai is pushes her deeper into his mysterious past, she discovers a shocking truth that is even more harrowing than the evil they are up against. It’s a secret Kai wants to keep hidden, especially from Janie. Cover and Excerpt from Taryn’s website.

Dark Seeker was an intriguing story with a kick ass lead character. I liked the mythology in Dark Seeker it was an interesting twist on vampire stories. Janie and Kai’s relationship was interesting. I really enjoyed how they interacted with each other and how their feelings for each other increased throughout the story. I’d love to learn more about Kai’s history what we did learn about his history made me do a WTH?? HE DID WHAT??? I was shocked! I enjoyed Matt’s character, I’m a little upset with Janie on how she treated him but I’m sure she had her reasons and was just panicking. I’m excited to see where the next book takes the story and these 3 characters.

Special thanks to Taryn for providing me a copy to review.

Review: Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer

This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended-Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer-one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack-and the man-she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive. Excerpt and book cover from the Nightshade website.
I liked how Andrea continued the story in Wolfsbane. I was excited to learn more about the Searchers and Wolfsbane definitely leads up nicely to Bloodrose. There was more information on the Packs and on the Searchers that test where loyalties lie. I had a hard time trying to decide which side was in the right. I liked the scenes between Cal and Shay except when they were fighting I wanted to slap them both for being dumb. I’m team Ren and though we never saw much of him what we did has left me pissed off and I have jumped off the train. I’m still deciding where I am going to get on next. I also loved the scene at the end with the 3 girls, it was my favorite and I almost died of laughter.

Review: Darkride by Laura Bradley Rede

Ander McNair used to be the favorite son of a great monster-hunting family – until he was bitten by a werewolf and the hunter became the hunted. Now anything that makes his pulse race, even a kiss from his girlfriend Cicely, is enough to turn him into a monster. When he finally gets a chance to earn his cure by killing a vampire prince, he finds he has to choose between his own past and the future of the girl he loves. Can a guy who’s not even human learn what it means to be a man?

Luke Marianez used to be an immortal vampire prince – until the witch he loved betrayed him and cursed him with the ability to die. Now he lives in the world of vampire blood bars, where the waitresses are the drinks, and dreams about killing the last of the witch’s line so he can live forever. But revenge doesn’t just mean breaking the curse. He wants to break the girl’s heart, too. Can Luke seduce Cicely without falling in love himself?

Cicely Watson doesn’t believe in werewolves or vampires. She’s not even sure she believes in true love. But she’s about to discover what all werewolves know:

People change. Cover and Excerpt from Laura website.

I like Darkride up until the ending. I really didn’t like the ending and I think it’s mostly because that isn’t how I wanted it to end. I do want to know where the story will go I hope Laura has a sequel in the mix as I am not happy with this ending and need some closure (that will make me happy Smile )

I totally love Ander, he is amazing! I love Cicely and his friendship – it is one of those friendships that you wish you had growing up. I’m not a fan of Luke I dislike him and don’t trust him as far as I can throw him. Which isn’t that far as I am weak hehe.

The book changes between the 3 main characters narrating the story. At first I didn’t like this because it seemed like every time they switch narrators it was getting good with the previous narrator. I got used to it after awhile and didn’t mind it after all. Overall, Darkride was a good read that I enjoyed minus the ending.

Review: Evanescence by Alexandra Pelaez

Sometimes she’s Mercedes Strand; daughter of wealthy business owners, high school senior, star student, occasional gladiator in a one-sided mean girl brawl, and founder of the most successful women’s charities in the country. Other times she’s Countess; a master of cyberspace and code who helps abused women in ways Mercedes never could. But there’s no need to worry about developing MPD or anything because helping others is the ultimate goal. No matter the cost to herself.

Shadow isn’t like Mercedes. Apart from the fact that he’s a five-hundred-year-old vampire, he knows there is no escape from the torment and oppression he and his fellow Outcasts suffer under the ruthless elites of vampire society, yet hopes for something better. It’s a fool’s hope, so it doesn’t matter if he fatally provokes the elites even as he does their bidding. But the latest assassination attempt aims to deprive him of more than his life. Ambushed, tortured, and left for dead, his sense of honor is delivered the coup de grace when he nearly drains the life of an innocent girl to save his own.

However, he soon discovers she’s more than just innocent. She knows what the elites will do to her if they find out she foiled their plans, and makes clear her desire to fight. A desire that’s infectious…along with her.

Evanescence was a slow read for me. It is only 97 pages long and took me over 8 hrs to read. I put my e-reader down several times to step away from the story. I was a bit confused on the vampire hierarchy, I didn’t fully understand the rankings and how each vampire was classified. I liked Mercedes online persona Countess better than her real life persona. I liked how Mercedes who has everything in the world is giving back to others and helping women who are from abusive relationships. That was probably the only thing I liked about her. I didn’t like how she made everything about Shadow. It seemed like her strong independent personality went out the window when it came to Shadow, she was worse than Bella in my opinion. I also felt the ending was a bit rushed. I think I may have liked the story better if it was longer and explained things a bit better. The story may get better in books 2 and 3 but overall this wasn’t a story for me.

Special thanks to Alexandra for providing me with a copy to review.

Today I have the lovely Sherry Soule to talk about Supernatural Urban Legends. Yup Sam and Dean come to my mind.

Supernatural Urban Legends
urban legends - A

Hi everyone, I’m Sherry Soule—waving from California, where it’s getting pretty foggy! Well, it’s the start of summer here, and even with the fog burning off by afternoon, I’m cranking the air conditioner and chatting on Twitter about my love of YA books.

Thanks for letting me stop by today as part of my Moonlight Mayhem Blog Tour this summer. It’s a thrill to get to be a guest and fellow booklovers such as yourself. For those of you who haven’t heard of my epic blog tour, it’s not too late to join the fun!

To celebrate the release of Sherry Soule’s new YA novel, MOONLIGHT MAYHEM coming this July, she has put together a few mysterious and intriguing urban legends that surround the eerie township of Whispering Pines, California…

Urban Legend #1

nephilim - photo 1

Some researchers believe that certain demon races are actually the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim. (They are also considered to be Shadow People.) The origination of the Nephilim began with the legend of an archangel named Raziel. Urban legend states that Raziel escorted a sect of angels that were to instruct humans in morality.

Unfortunately, these angels began to educate man in sciences that God had deemed to be forbidden. These subjects included astrology, divination, and magic. The tutelage went on for centuries, until the angels began to pine for the human females.

After the fallen angels, or sometimes known as the Fallen, had sexual relations with the women, their unholy union resulted in the hybrid offspring called: Nephilim, which are the direct descendants of the antediluvian Fallen. Nephilim are also known as the Grigori or the Watchers.

It has been insinuated that one of the main reasons for the great flood, was not only to punish man, but to cleanse the earth of the Nephilim created from the union of fallen angels and human women. The flood banished most of the Fallen and their offspring into a Sheol.

So, do you believe in the Nephilim? What do you think will happen if they are ever freed?

Urban Legend #2

ravenhurst manor- photo 2

One haunted house claim that continues to be an urban legend is the infamous, Ravenhurst Manor in Whispering Pines. Books and stories have been written based on its hauntings and its reputation as one of California's most ghostly places.

Ravenhurst Manor’s first owner was a woman and dark sorceress named, Rowan Broussard. After her death, the estate was used as an all girl’s boarding school for many years. The sixty room Gothic mansion was listed for sale with the resident ghosts. Other odd things that occurred in in this house were: doors and windows that opened or closed on their own, cold drafts, whispering voices, and some visitors even claimed to see a dark shadowy figure roaming the halls.

However, Ravenhurst is most famously linked to the disappearance of six children during the years of 1964 through 1967. (After the school was closed, the estate became the property of the town before it was sold to an wealthy, oil magnate.) After the children’s' bodies were discovered buried within the walls of the house, obviously from less than peaceful circumstances, the town buried them in Silent Hollows Cemetery.

Did these Children buried on unconsecrated ground, lead to the strange tragedy that would make this mansion so famous?

Urban Legend #3

Zombie Apocalypse - photo 3

Ah, let’s move on to the zombie apocalypse!

Another interesting urban legend states that on September 28, 1941, during an eclipse, a zombie was spotted in Whispering Pines. To make matters worse, a fire at the local mill had swept through town. As day turned to night, more zombies appeared. Many townsfolk mistook the undead for dazed mill workers. After the residents received hugs from the zombies, they were bitten by these paranormals, and soon the epidemic spread across the town like wildfire.

To make matters worse, the roads and bridges connecting Whispering Pines to the rest of the Bay Area had burned in the fire. The townsfolk had no way to escape. Scores of people become lost when they chose to venture into the dark depth of Deadwood Grove rather than face the insatiable zombie menace.

Within days, the Paranormal Research Group (PRG) converged on Whispering Pines in a variety of aircraft. They established a base on the south side of the forest and went about the process of extermination. It took two weeks to secure the town. A total of 500 people were plague-ridden, an enormous number considering that there wasn’t a zombie vaccine available at this time.

Whatever the case, Whispering Pines’s zombie outbreak affected just under 600 people, making it one of the worst cases in U.S. history.

Are you prepared for a zombie apocalypse? What if zombies start showing up again?

Otherworldly Creatures. Dazzling Magic. Fiery Romance.

Shiloh Ravenwolf thought she was getting used to the strange events in Whispering Pines, until the full moon brings another surge of supernatural threats to her coastal town. Ferocious wolves, deadly necromancers, and shambling zombies have descended upon the neighborhood, so Shiloh needs to gain control of her magical abilities—fast!

It sucks that she has a crippling fear of the dark, which for a demon hunter can be an epic problem.

When her classmates are attacked by a mysterious creature and her father is murdered, Shiloh vows vengeance. Forcing her phobias aside, she forms an unlikely coven of supernaturally gifted teens to help her eradicate this menace. Except that's not all Shiloh has to worry about. She’s battling a different monster within herself and struggling not to become the very thing she fights: evil.

But with demon blood inside her—anything can happen…

Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent hc c(2)
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her. Excerpt and book cover from Veronica’s website.

Every time I walked into Chapters I get asked if I need help looking for something to read. I say no I’m just looking and they always ask if I have read The Hunger Games. I say yeppers and I LOVED it. Then they tell me that I HAVE to read Divergent because it’s WAY better than The Hunger Games. This goes on for a few more trips to the book store so I finally give in and buy the book to see what the fuss is about. I tried not to compare The Hunger Games and Divergent because The Hunger Games is on a pedestal and it wouldn’t be fair to Divergent to compare it.
BUT Divergent is no Hunger Games. It is still good don’t get me wrong and I loved it but it’s not The Hunger Games.
1) It didn’t leave me breathless (literally)
2) It didn’t make me need to stay up super late reading
So I disagree with almost everyone that it’s not better than The Hunger Games but it still is a 5 in my book and is one of my favorite stories. I’m just not going to say it’s better than The Hunger Games.
What I did like? One word for you Four! Damn who doesn’t want it just jump him??? You are kidding yourself if you say me! I don’t! Deep down you really wanna jump the Four.
I liked the characters and I like how everyone was placed in a district based on their personalities and how they become of age they can decide who they want to be. Tris’s relationship between the characters was interesting. I loved how she interacted with everyone. She lived by the golden rule. If you were a bully she was one right back. I liked how her relationship with Four grew through the novel. I didn’t see the ending coming it left me wanting more and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

Review: Fifty Shames of Earl Grey by Fanny Merkin (aka Andrew Shaffer)

A shrewd, laugh–out–loud parody of E. L. James' bestselling Fifty Shades of Grey series:

Young, arrogant, tycoon Earl Grey seduces the naïve coed Anna Steal with his overpowering good looks and staggering amounts of money, but will she be able to get past his fifty shames, including shopping at Walmart on Saturdays, bondage with handcuffs, and his love of BDSM (Bards, Dragons, Sorcery, and Magick)? Or will his dark secrets and constant smirking drive her over the edge? Excerpt and cover froom

I have never read a parody before but after reading Fifty Shames of Earl Grey I would totally do it again. The story is awesomely terrible and I mean this in the best way possible. I was laughing my butt off throughout almost the entire thing. There was way too many times my boyfriend yelled at me “Okay… SMUT is NOT that funny” I don’t know how many times I had to tell him it wasn’t the real story it was a parady. I hadn’t read Fifty Shades of Grey when I read Fifty Shames of Earl Grey, which you don’t really need to read in order to get a good kick out of Fifty Shames. I loved the pokes at Twilight they were jolly good fun. Sometimes the things that Anna or Earl did were so stupid that you had to roll your eyes and laugh. I had to put the book down a few times to clear my eyes from laughing so hard because I had tears in them. If you have read Fifty Shades of Grey or if you are thinking about reading it you NEED to pick up yourself a copy of Fifty Shames of Earl Grey – just trust me you have to. I just finished Fifty Shades of Grey this week and I highly suggest you read this parody it is a must add to any book lovers shelf.

Review: Ties to the Blood Moon by Robin P. Waldrop

Ties to the blood moon

Genevieve is a teenage girl who moves in with her aunt in Alaska after the death of her mother. Soon after her arrival she learns the things she was raised to believe only existed in fairytales are in fact a big part of her history. When it gets to be too much she seeks refuge in the arms of her new boyfriend, William, only to find out he's not who she thought he was either. Cover and excerpt from Goodreads.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the mythology that was used it dragged me into the story and I wanted to know how it all ended. It does have a Twilight feel to it with vampires and werewolves but if you get over that it’s a really good story with its own uniqueness. Gen was kind of a brat. When she didn’t get her way she threw a hissy fit and everyone let her get away with it. That drove me a bit crazy about her character but I’ll give her some slack because she just lost her mother. I wasn’t sure who was trustworthy and who I should be watching out for. I was completely surprised but the ending. Overall, I really enjoyed Ties to the Blood Moon.

Review: First Kill (Slayer Chronicles) by Heather Brewer

Joss McMillan’s perfect life crashes down the night he witnesses his sister’s murder — at the hands of a vampire. He then finds out his family’s secret heritage: They are part of the Slayer Society, a group whose mission is to rid the world of vampires. Joss is their new recruit. As Joss trains, bent on seeking revenge for his sister, he discovers powers that could make him the youngest, strongest Slayer in history. But there is a traitor in the Society, one whose identity would shake Joss to the core . . . if the traitor doesn’t kill him first.
With over a million copies already in print, The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod is still sinking its fangs into new readers every day. Now, bestselling author Heather Brewer brings us the other side of the story, from the perspective of Vlad’s former friend turned mortal enemy: vampire slayer Joss McMillan. This is the first in a series of five books that can be read alongside Vlad Tod or entirely on their own. Excerpt and book cover from Heather’s website.
As many of you know I love Heather Brewer. She is one of my favorite authors and when it was announced that there was going to be a spinoff series of The Vlad Tod Series I jumped for joy. Though I was never on the Team Joss train I was interested in learning about how Joss became a hunter. Heather wrote Joss’s training in such detail that everything that Joss felt you felt as well. I fell for all the red herrings like Joss did. Not once did I guess right L. After reading First Kill I have more love and respect for Joss….Sorry Vlad. If you are a fan of the Vlad Tod Series you need to pick up First Kill.

Review: Chaos by Megan Duncan

Is any shot at living, worth dying for?
They thought they’d be safe, but a world ruled by chaos doesn’t die easily.
When Max turned on the radio transmissions assuring safety, they came. But, it wasn’t just survivors of the demon apocalypse that crawled their way into the abandoned military base. A myriad of beastly demons unlike any they’ve ever seen, came as well. Abby, and her companions, struggle to survive as the evil around them grows. Desperate to endure, and to defend their fellow survivors, Abby and a squad of fierce fighters, take on a dangerous mission that has deadly consequences Excerpt and cover from Goodreads
I don’t know why but Megan’s Agents of Evil novels just mess with my head and give me nightmares! I love it! I read this over the Canada Day Long Weekend and Saturday and Sunday night - I had nightmares about demon crows and demon spiders (I HATE SPIDERS) I actually have a “spider scream”. Chaos was too short for my liking. I wanted more of the story I love it so much! There was a ton of action in Chaos which made me turn the pages faster. We met some new characters which I kinda sorta love them all. Some reminded me of characters from The Walking Dead and I totally pictured them like that. My two apocalypse loves mashed together = awesomeness. We learned a hint of how the apocalypse might have happened and I can’t FREAKING wait for book 3 to come out!!! I seriously need to know what Abby and crew are going to do and what is out….. Sorry I’m not going to finish that sentence and ruin the storyline for you :P. I love Carter and Taya I wish we saw a bit more of them but what we did see of them I loved. I loved how they added so much to the story when we saw them. I love how Abby and Max’s relationship is growing; I’m starting to feel what Abby feels with their relationship.

Review: If I Die by Rachel Vincent

If I die
Everyone else is talking about Eastlake High’s gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck, but Kaylee Cavanaugh has bigger things on her mind. Kaylee’s a banshee—her scream is a portent of death.
But the next scream might hit too close to home. Kaylee’s borrowed lifeline has almost run out.
Yeah—it’s a shock to her, too. So to distract herself from her own problems, Kaylee is determined to defend her school against the latest supernatural threat. That hot new teacher is really an incubus, who feeds from the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend’s delinquent ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren’t quite human either.
But Kaylee’s running out of time, and those who love her will do anything to save her life.

ANYTHING. Excerpt and book cover from Rachel’s website.
Rachel is climbing up my freaking amazing authors list. She’s is definitely in the top 3 now. If I Die left me in a puddle of emotions. I’m not 100% sure if I was crying because I was happy, mad or sad at the end. I still hate Sabine. I don’t know if this will ever change as she will never ever be in my good books. Nash and Kaylee’s relationship is still on the rocks and witnessing them together and seeing them not acting like “them” breaks my heart as I’m so on Team Nash. I know there are a lot of Team Tod fans, I like him as well but I like him in a different way and I am so glaring at you all right now. I am looking forward to see where the next novel goes as Kaylee’s story had such a twist that will forever change the course of the story.
